will a brown colour cover the black? or do i need to bleach i first?
I have natural black hair (really really really dark brown) basically black...i want to dye it a bit lighter?
Brown dye wont cover black but don't bleach it. They have vegetable based dyes that will lighten hair without destrroying it like bleach will. If you can't afford to go to the salon, then go to Walgreens or something, and go to where they have hair dye, and there's dyes designed specifically for dark brown brunettes looking to go about 2 shades lighter. I've never tried, but I'm sure those dyes are a lot safer.

don't dye it! black is the best hair color if anything dye it black... maybe put some red in it (not excessive)
seriously, you don't want to go lighter...

bleaching your hair can destroy it, so dont bleach. there are some hair dyes that are specially made for dark hair colors but i would say definitely go to a hairstylist, especially if ur dying ur hair for the first time.

Bleaching is not necessary here. If you go to a good salon, they can do your hair. Dyeing your hair at home may lead to brassy colors, instead of a warm brown color.

I have very dark brown hair, almost black. I find that going to a salon and getting it done is better. I have tried so many colors myself and either it looks no different or only looks different in light and to be honest, it's not that different. I wouldn't bleach it myself, but that's totally up to you. It's pricey to have it done professionally, but they know exactly what to do to achieve the color you are looking for. Best of luck!
