I am not sure what the texture of your hair is (coarse or fine) but when you apply styling products, are you making sure that you're applying it in sections? Or if you're moisturizing, are you making sure to apply it in sections? It sounds like your products are only reaching the outer portion of your hair and the inner part is being left dry.
