your gonna have to bleach it first. then dye it with the color you want. herbal essences is good for shelf brand. my recommendation is to go with a salon. they know exactly what to do to get the color you want, plus it's healthier for your hair.

I usally just use the cheap revlon kind.... and sometimes and they have a special price for 2 boxes, like 2 for 1.

It works pretty well but the color doesn't always last very long. That can be a good thing... if you don't like the color or are ready for a change. Or it's cheap way to lighten your hair before using a more expensive type of hair dye. It would suck if you paid a lot for hair dye that didn't come out light enough.

hello. goldwell (may i suggest lol) or redken. my mom is a hairstylist and she uses these. (do not go for box color) they fry your hair and dont last as long. if you have the money to do so i would go get it done. i would not color it yourself, becuase this is not just a few shades lighter, its a dramatic change. but if you do want to do it yourself i would browse these sites!

Just be sure that you invest in a good brand. Don't go for the ones that don't have any peroxide. I have never had any luck with them. They don't take with darker hair. But any name brand good dye permanent color will do. Get the permanent dye color for the other doesn't work at all either. And if you want a certain color, always go a couple of shades lighter for it always comes out darker than it shows on the box. Always! IF you are going for auburn, go for the lighter for sure, for it is almost black. I know for I used it myself. It was almost a dark brown nearing black. You may have to strip your hair with a stripper--bleach before you get your hair to a red color. It is according what color red you are wanting. If you are wanting a true red, and your hair is a very dark color, you will definitely have to strip it of it's color. Now this is only my opinion. I am not a hair dresser in any way. I have only done my hair and the hair of my sister's and daughter and friends and family.

I agree with Sugargoo. Go to a salon. I colored my own hair for over 30 years. Sometimes it came out brassy, sometimes too dark. In other words, I fried my hair. Finally I got smart and went to a salon. Now I get my natural mousy light brown hair highlighted and I'm so happy. It's the color I've been looking for for a very long time, and it lasts longer than if I dyed it myself!
