What is the best way to active the curls in my natural afro hair?

I am mixed race and have very curly hair (like mel b - spice girls), which is not totally afro but inbetween. I use a really heavy (pantene smooth and sleek) moisturising conditioner when it's wet.

I have to wet it every day to activate the curls, the conditioner really helps them from staying formed and not frizzy. If you can, always let it dry natuarally, your hair is much more likely to curl after being wet and just left to it's own devices! I also leave the conditioner in so that it weighs the curl down and use an alcohol free gel (l'oreal fx) to set the curls, i just run it through with my fingers and make sure it evenly distributed.... use a type that slides through your hair easily and doesn't have a crispy effect.... let it dry naturally!!!!! and do not comb!!!!!!

Keep your hair really well moisturised thou... using conditioners and not grease/oil type products. The black hair products grease etc just straighten it and encourage it to either frizz or clump together....

Conditioner and Gel... and let it dry naturally without combing!

Hope this helps!

Just read a couple more of the answers.....Yes.... definately stay away from relaxers or any kind of permanent treatment... you'll get curls alright... nasty, dry and damaged curls! And it'll take forever to grow it out!

I would go to a good hairdresser who understands afro hair and let them recommend something...I have very curly hair and use a product called Curl Booster sometimes...it re-activates the curls and smells good too. I don't have afro hair tho so may not work for your hair type...good luck with it.

Sweetie the best way to get curls and soft texture for natural black hair (afro) is using a texturizer. You can go to any beauty supply store ask one of the employees. But you can go to a Walgreens to get "Botanicals Texturizer" it's a great product.

I woulds say to use castor oil in your hair daily. massage it into the roots and entire hair length. this should be done religiously, and you will find that not only does your hair feel softer, it will be softer and look wonderful. goodluck
