Although it is the popular theory, shaving doesn't actually make the hair itself more coarse. It just cuts it off and creates a blunt end (which feels more coarse) instead of how it would naturally be tapered(which feels softer). Waxing pulls the hair out at the root, so when it grows back, it grows back tapered, so it feels softer.

you know... hair does not grow back coarser. The hair roots can't know what happened to the hair over skin level, because the hair really is "dead". There will never be more hairs either after shaving - which is a common misunderstanding too.

What makes hair feel coarse is that when you shave, all hairs get to be the same length in addition to the diagonal cut. If you wax, you take the hair by the root. It'll grow out all new and feel smooth. The root might get weakened after some waxes. This will make hair grow slowly or some hairroots might even stop producing hair. In addition: hair grows in different speed. so if you wax today and this hair is outgrown in 6 weeks, some other hair has grown in the meantime. So the first year you wax, you might have to wax more often. After waxing for a while this will be the best result for you. It hurts tho - (I have only waxed legs... by the way....) I guess this theory goes for down-under-hair as well...

Hair does tend to grow coaser after shaving. I know of nothing to make it grow thinner.

I have found that if you take mayo and a little olive oil and mix it together....stay with me here........and rub it on those areas that your hair will grow back thinner. You must do this 4 times a day for 2 weeks and dont shave. If you want it thicker just substitute the mayo for peanut butter. You might need to have a girlfriend or your wife or I guess boyfriend(yuck) to help spread this on. Make sure it is rubbed into your skin really well. If you lucky your girl will like mayo or PB and lick it off for you.

It actually is not growing back extra course, it grows back at an angle or atleast the tip off the hair is at an angle from where you shaved. Plus it is short so the hair is not as flexible until it get some length and curls. Best andvise is to keep up with the shaving, wax, or deal with a little discomfort and grow it back.
